Orville Kjelden, age 91, of Brookings, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment at Singsaas Lutheran Church, rural Astoria, South Dakota. Visitations will precede services at the church. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Orville Bernard Kjelden was born October 22, 1921, on the family farm between Hendricks and White, to Ole O. and Bertha (Sandro) Kjelden. He was baptized and confirmed at Singsaas Lutheran Church. He attended country school at District No. 63 in Oak Lake Township. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until 1945. Orville worked for area farmers and farmed some for himself. He worked with his brother Edwin for a salvage company from Chicago for many years taking up railroad tracks in several states. He later worked at SDSU as a maintenance worker until his retirement. Orville was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. He enjoyed walking and having coffee with friends. Survivors include four nephews: Larry, Robert, Keith, and Duane Kjelden; and an aunt, Ruth Crooks. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Philbert, Clifford, Ronald, Edwin, and Lloyd.
