Orin S. Hevle, age 88, of Brookings, died Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites at First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
Orin Sidney Hevle was born January 31, 1921, at Irene, South Dakota, to Gustav and Ida (Hinseth) Hevle. He attended country school near Irene and then began working on a farm. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, serving during World War II in Iran and Italy. Following his discharge from the Army he returned to Irene where he worked for the Standard Oil service station and bulk dealer and also a local carpenter. On July 10, 1949, Orin married Ruth Lee at the Mission Hill Lutheran Church near Irene. In 1958 they moved to Brookings where Orin worked as a carpenter and later locksmith at SDSU. He retired in 1986. He has resided at Brookview Manor for the last year and eight months. He and Ruth celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July.
Orin was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of the American Legion in Irene and the Elks Lodge in Brookings. He collected pocket watches and did woodworking, made flatbread and lefse, and he was a great joke and story teller. For 29 years he was a ticket taker at SDSU football and basketball games. He enjoyed his morning coffee breaks with friends, and most of all had a great love for his girls.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hevle, of Brookings; a daughter: Lori (Royal) Koepsell, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two granddaughters: Adrienne (Erik) Watz of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Greta Koepsell of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two brothers: Gilman Hevle of Irene, South Dakota, and Robert (Glenda) Hevle of Houston, Texas; three sisters: Lorraine Johnson of Brookings, Alma Rollins of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mae Hammond of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces and nephews; and many friends in Irene and Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Hevle; and two sisters: Mildred Haugen and Sylvia Nilson.
