Obituary

Olin Horace Gile was born November 11, 1922, at Powell, Wyoming, to John P. and Agnes A. (Olin) Gile He died Friday, February 14, 2003, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. At the age of two Olin moved with his family to a farm near Brookings, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1940 and attended South Dakota State College. On June 11, 1946, he married Betty Oster in Brookings. Olin farmed for a number of years and then worked for the Farm Home Administration until retiring. Olin served on the board of directors of Peavey Lumber Company for about three years. He was a life time member of the Elks. He was instrumental in organizing reunions for the Brookings High School classes of 1939-1940-1941. He played the violin in high school and college, and more recently enjoyed playing the organ. He spent many hours in his wood working shop (Gile Sled Company) making various items. For a number of years, he and Betty erected a widely known display of Christmas lights and decorations. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Brookings; two daughters: Judith Gile of Brookings, and Kathleen (John) Smith of Holly Tree, Alabama; and a grandson, Gile Smith. Olin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Winifred.
