Norma Helen Mable Berg Vanderpan went to her eternal rest on October 14, 2015 at Brookings Hospital surrounded by her family. Interment will be Monday, October 19, at the First Lutheran Cemetery prior to the Memorial Service. The Memorial Service will be held at First Lutheran Church at 11:00 with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held at Eidsness Funeral Home, Sunday, October 18, at 5:00 -6:30 with a prayer service and sharing of memories immediately following. Norma was born October 2, 1926 to Kristian and Maria (Svidal) Berg at Starkweather, ND. She was baptized at Bergen Lutheran Church in 1926 and confirmed in her Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1940. Norma received her elementary and secondary education at the Starkweather Public Schools graduating as an honor student in 1944. She attended Concordia College, Moorhead, MN for two years and returned to her home community to teach elementary school at Webster, ND. On August 3, 1947, Norma married her college sweetheart, Leslie Vanderpan. Together they served parishes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America at Turtle Lake, ND; Phillip, SD; Sioux Rapids, IA; Sharon, ND; and Richardton-Taylor, ND. Their life was blessed by seven children, Norman, Peter, Mary, Timothy, Lois, Theodore and Dorthy. Norma returned to school graduating from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1963 with her Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Social Studies and Education. Norma completed her Master of Arts as a Reading Specialist in 1970 from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. After teaching in the Elementary and Secondary Schools of West Lyon Public Schools, Inwood, Iowa and Estelline Public Schools, Estelline, South Dakota, Norma taught as a Reading Specialist at Brookings Middle School for twenty years. Norma enjoyed traveling, needlepoint, embroidery, quilting, reading and writing on her computer. She composed devotionals, recorded family history and life in general. As Chaplain for Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, Norma wrote litanies for the monthly meetings. These were compiled into a book which was gifted to the South Dakota State Alpha Delta Kappa. It was published and made available to the members of Alpha Delta Kappa International. Norma was an active member of First Lutheran Church. She served as President of the Women's Missionary Federation of the Black Hills Conference and served on various Boards as well as President of First Lutheran Church, the Governing Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the University Lutheran Center at South Dakota State University, South Dakota Lutheran Campus Ministry Coordinating Committee and in leadership positions in eighteen Adults and Teens Encounter Christ Retreats in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota and as Alpha Delta Kappa local and state Treasurer. Norma served in various capacities for the local Republican party, including Brookings County Chairperson. Norma served on the Brookings Centennial Committee and was a member of Chapter P, PEO. Norma served as State President of Secondary Teachers of Reading, various capacities with the Brookings Education Association, the Sekota Uniserve Board and as a member of Phi Delta Kappa. Norma was a Charter Member of two Sons of Norway Lodges - King Olav V 483 at Canton, SD and Fjordland 508 of Brookings where she also served in various capacities including president. Norma served on the District 1 Sons of Norway Board as Publicity Director, Cultural Director and as the Editor/Coordinator of A History of District I, Sons of Norway, Centennial Edition 1985 - 1995. During her lifetime Norma made numerous heritage trips to the Sunnfjord region of Norway; one as a delegate to the International Sons of Norway Convention held in Lillehammer. Honors received were a National Defense Grant, membership in Alpha Delta Kappa, Brookings Teacher of the Year, Merit Mothers of America, Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women and the Alpha Delta Kappa Altruistic Service Award. Norma is survived by her children, Norman (Marta), East Grand Forks, MN; Peter of Brookings, SD; Mary, Walnut Creek CA; Timothy (Melody) of Harrisburg. SD; Lois (Jay) Monson, Owatonna, MN; Theodore (Sara) of Woodbury, MN; and Dorthy Tufte of Sioux Falls, SD. Grandchildren: Matthew (McKynsay) Vanderpan, Sonja (Trevor) Brandt, Jer Monson, Tom Monson, Ann (James) Slagle, Jonathan Monson, Marie Vanderpan, Heidi Vanderpan, Tyler (Natalie) Tufte, Krystle Tufte, Kymberli Tufte and Christina Vanderpan. Great-grandchildren: Callan Brandt; Clara Vanderpan; Craig Vanderpan; Katelyn, Lucas and Abigail Tufte; and Hadley Slagle. Also surviving are sisters Lois (David) Anderson, Apache Junction, AZ, and Ann (Edward) Ellenson, Henning, MN; sisters-and brothers-in-law Bette Berg, Hazel Berg, Hazel Berg and Clayton Englestad and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Vanderpan, granddaughter, Kaija Louise Vanderpan, son-in-law, Steven Tufte, brothers Bjarne, Monrad, Haldor and Clarence Berg and sister Carole Engelstad. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Brookings.
