Norma Ponto died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Kingsbury Memorial Manor in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Norma Vaye (Peterson) Ponto was born December 10, 1932, at Madison, South Dakota, to Norman and Nora (Smith) Peterson. She moved with her family at an early age to Colman where she graduated from high school. After high school she worked as a teller at the bank in Colman. On June 5, 1955, she married Harlan M. Ponto at Colman. The couple operated Cozy Grove Farm for a number of years. Harlan died March 27, 1996. Norma moved to Brookings in February 1998. She had been employed at Hy Vee Food Store. Norma was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brookings. She served as treasurer of the South Dakota Brown Swiss Association, and was a 4-H leader for several years. She enjoyed crafts, baking, sewing, and collecting cows. Survivors include three children: Steven (Vonda) Ponto of Colman, Debra (Rick) Ford of Bruce, and Jacolyn (Michael) Olson of Nunda; ten grandchildren; and three sisters: Anita Surmon of Lebanon, OR, Myrna (Jerry)French of Dallas, OR, and Ruth (Bob) Hanson of Redmond, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Gerald and Duane Peterson.
