Norma Jean (Hawe) Karlstad, 84 died Friday, February 12, 2016, surrounded by her family at United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services are at 10:30 am Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial is in First Lutheran Cemetery in Volga. Visitation is Monday, February 15 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Eidsness Funeral Home in Volga.

Norma was born February 15, 1931, in Sioux Falls, SD to George and Ethel (Reed) Hawe. She attended school in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington High School in 1948. She worked at Sioux Valley Hospital and Manchester Biscuit Company in Sioux Falls up until her marriage. She was married to Harlan Knutson Karlstad on November 25, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Volga and WELCA.

They farmed near Volga before moving to Seattle in 1966, returning to Volga in 1971. She later worked at Parkview Center in Volga. Norma enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; traveling, reading, and flowers.

Norma is survived by four children, Steven (Linda) and Stuart (Tammy) of Volga; Sharon of Lincoln, NE and Scott of Brookings; six grandchildren (John (Emily) Karlstad; Kristen (Cory) Kern; Joshua (Malaika) Murfield; Rebekah (Sam) Ghormley; Amanda (Courtney) Huber and Amy Karlstad) and 10 great-grandchildren (Devon, Beyonce and Jayden Karlstad; Madalyn and Conner Kern; Jaxon, Harlee and Havynn Huber; Max Murfield and Julius Ghormley).

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister, Berniece Duimstra; brother, Raymond Hawe; and grandson, Caleb Murfield.
