Obituary

Nora Stangeland, age 99, of Brookings, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the United Living Community.  Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 29, 2022, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with burial in Graceland Cemetery at Madison, SD.  Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, April 28 th at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Nora Christine Bergheim Hiaring Stangeland was born on April 14, 1923, in Farmington Township, Lake County, Madison, SD to Nordahl and Hannah (Hexom) Bergheim.

Nora received her education in rural schools in the Madison area and graduated from Beadle High School.  She continued her education at Beadle College in Madison and received her teachers certificate.  She taught in a rural school north of Madison before marrying her husband, Wesley Hiaring on June 9, 1946.  The couple eventually moved to the Rapid City and Lead, SD areas where Nora taught in rural schools in those communities.  On January 15, 1951, Wesley lost his life while working in the gold mine.

Nora moved back to Madison where she was active in teaching Sunday School and participating in the Ladie's Aid.  On December 26, 1955, Nora was united in marriage to Josef Stangeland at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, SD.  The couple soon moved to the Lake Campbell area, where they farmed until 1970.  Following their retirement from farming, Nora and Josef moved to the community of Volga.  Josef passed away on February 2, 1986.

Nora was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Volga, where she acted as a Sunday school teacher and was very active in Ladie's Aid.  She was a member of WELCA and the Sons of Norway.  She also enjoyed gardening and quilting.

Nora is survived by her children: Onita (Michael) Stout, of Rapid City, SD, Arlene Mathiesen, of Westminster, CO, Ingrid (Mark) Werner, of Brookings, SD, and Judith (Mark) Stanley, of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arloine (Steve) Goodfellow, of Brookings, SD; and a sister-in-law, Deanna Bergheim.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; four sisters; three brothers; and a grandson, Jason Mathiesen.
