Nellie Van Driessen, age 93, of Brookings, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the First Reformed Church in Volga, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will precede funeral services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Reformed Church. Nellie (Vander Wal) Van Driessen was born May 16, 1911, in Bangor Township in Brookings County, South Dakota, to August and Johanna (Boon) Vander Wal. She attended country school at District No. 77. She worked for several families in Iowa before her marriage to John Van Driessen on February 21, 1934, at Volga. The couple farmed near Volga until moving into town in 1962. Nellie worked for a time at the Brookings Hospital. John died February 15, 1985. Nellie was a life time member of First Reformed Church in Volga, where she also belonged to the ladies aid. She was an excellent seamstress, and crocheted beautiful doilies and afghans. Survivors include two sons: Larry (Jenett) Van Driessen of Black Hawk, South Dakota, and Gary (Jo) Van Driessen of Albany, Oregon; nine grandchildren: Dawn (Larry) Porterfield of Black Hawk, South Dakota, Kevin Hansen of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Kelly (Lori) Hansen of Colman, South Dakota, Korry (Tammy) Hansen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kurt (Angel) Hansen of Sioux Falls, and Wendy, Theresa, Becky, and C.J. of Albany, Oregon; great-grandchildren: Brit and Chase Porterfield, Brady and Lane Hansen, Gabriel,Lane, and Logan Hansen, Daniel (Michelle) Porterfield and Jaxson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers: Arie A. and William A. Vander Wal; two sisters: Cornelia Mans and Margaret Mulder; and two grandchildren: Ricky and Kim.
