Obituary

Nellie Mast, age 95, of Brookings, SD passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Brookview Manor where she had been a resident for the past 9 years. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 31, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church of Volga with Rev. Jerry Buwalda officiating. Visitation will be held at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga December 30, 2012 from 4 to 7:00 p.m. and also prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Trinity Cemetery, Volga. Undesignated memorials will be directed to the Volga Christian School Nellie Marie Mast was born January 4, 1917 in a farm home near Lake Goldsmith, Volga, SD, to Bastian and Marjory (Boon) Vermeulen who immigrated from The Netherlands in 1903. The youngest of ten children (four boys and six girls), her mother died when Nellie was five. Her family moved to a farm on the edge of Volga when she was of school age. She attended Volga Public elementary school through eighth grade. She helped in her sisters homes and worked as a nanny/housekeeper in the Volga-Brookings area for several years. Nellie married Henry Mast on December 3, 1936 at the Christian Reformed Church in Volga.. Following their marriage the couple lived and worked on the George Cotton farm north of Volga for two years. They continued to live and farm near Volga for 64 years before moving to Dakota Sun in Volga in August, 2002. They moved to Brookview Manor in November, 2003 where Henry passed away on January 10, 2007. Nellie was a homemaker, helped on their dairy farm, and enjoyed caring for her family. She also enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church and the Dorcus Ladies Aid, the Gideon Society Auxiliary and participated in women's neighborhood Bible studies for a number of years. She and Henry also provided foster care to children in their home. Family was very special to Nellie -- she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include five children: Charles (Margaret) Mast of Jenison, MI, Myron (Willa) Mast of Grand Rapids, MI, Harold (Angie) Mast of Kentwood, MI, Elsie (Gary) Kleinjan of Mansfield, TX and Carol (Tom) Kleinjan of Bruce, SD; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Maris (Charles) Breaw, Harriet Mast of Brookings, SD, Jeanette (Henry, Jr.) DeLange of Platte, SD, Jane Mast of Volga, SD, Ruth Story of Denver, CO and Clara Mast of Volga. She was preceded in death by her parents; nine siblings and their spouses: Tracy (John) Boersma, Anna (Henry) Rens, Arie (Effie) Vermeulen, Minnie (Herman) Clapp, Jake (Magdalena) Vermeulen, Gertrude (George)Schutt, Katie (Bert) Hoogwerf, Peter (Helen) Vermeulen and Cornelius (Helen) Vermeulen. Also preceding her in death were parents-in-law Nick and Mary Mast; in-laws Anna (Marinus) Koopman, Hilda (Bill) Bloomendaal, John Mast, Herman Mast, Pete Mast, and Clarence Mast.
