Myrtle Olson, age 96, of Brookings, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 27, 2006, at the Brookings Wesleyan Church, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery at Brookings. Visitations are from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Myrtle Gladys (Lenning) Olson was born February 1, 1910, at Bruce, South Dakota, to Martin and Helga (Casberg) Lenning. When she was five years old, her mother passed away. Myrtle and her three brothers were raised by various families. In 1926 Myrtle was united in marriage to Melvin Olson, and together they raised six children. Melvin passed away October 31, 1970. Myrtle was a hard worker all of her life. She was employed at Nicks Hamburger Shop for many years. Her children remember sneaking in the back door of Nicks to ask for ice cream money. Myrtle later worked for SDSU as a dorm cleaning lady until she retired. She became a resident of the United Retirement Center March 22, 2005. Myrtle was always full of energy, and she loved to cook and bake bread and buns. She made the best lefse and apple pie. If you ever stopped by, she always had lunch for you. Her many friends and family were always welcome. Myrtles love of church and the word of God were her strength. You always knew what she stood for; she lived a Christian life. She was a member for many years of the First Assembly of God. At the time of her passing she was attending the Brookings Wesleyan Church. Survivors include her five children: Arvin of West Monroe, Louisiana, Delores (Jim) Coleman of Des Moines, Iowa, LaVon Hines of Sioux Falls, Gloria (Ron) Cornelius of Lemmon, South Dakota, and Lucille (John) Schoon of Brookings; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; daughter, Maxine; and three brothers: Harry, Melius, and Raymond.
