Myrna (Willmott) McCulloch was born February 21, 1936, at White, South Dakota, to Harry and Mary Ellen (Smith) Willmott. She was baptized, received her first Holy Communion, confirmed and married at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in White, South Dakota. She attended school in White and graduated in 1954. After graduation, she turned down a full scholarship to South Dakota State to pursue a career and adventure. She took a job with the FHA in Milbank, South Dakota, where she met her beloved husband, Kenneth J. McCulloch. They were married in White, South Dakota on October 20, 1956. Myrna and Kens first adventure was a trip to Alaska, where they pulled a 6-ton mobile home from El Paso, Texas up the Alcan Highway. While in Alaska, she worked for RCA. After moving to Bellevue, Nebraska, where they lived for seventeen years, they built their home and a restaurant, Taco Towne. They also owned and operated an asbestos abatement company, an antique furniture shop and a refinishing business. Myrna was very involved in reading reform, and her passion was literacy. To that extent, she took over and reformed St. Agnes Catholic School in south Omaha, and to her credit, created a school where every child excelled and no child failed. In 1978, she founded and directed the Riggs Institute, a non-profit literacy foundation, until her illness in May, 2005. Today the Riggs Institute is known world wide for helping children and adults learn how to read. Myrna and Ken moved to Oregon in 1984. Myrna enjoyed reading, sewing, singing, browsing estate sales, spending time with her grandchildren, and showing her friends and family the beautiful sights of Oregon. Survivors include her husband Kenneth; a daughter, Carolyn (Brett) Knutson of rural Brookings, South Dakota, and a son, Richard (Lisa) McCulloch of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren: Theresa M. Knutson, Cecilia S. Knutson, Regina D. Knutson, Monica M. Knutson, and Jacob M. McCulloch: four sisters: Janice Doni (Marvin) Buechler, of Kokomo, Indiana, Kathy (David) Gilfillan, of Bellevue, Nebraska, Carolyn (George) Covrig, of Brookings, and Patricia (Dave) Landsman, of Elkton; two brothers: Raymond (Jeanne) Willmott, of Owatonna, Minnesota and Harry Bill Willmott, of Austin, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Charles and S. Thomas Willmott; two sisters: Ellen Dempsey and Mary Radermacher; a niece, Susan Dempsey, and two nephews: Michael Buechler and Robert Willmott.
