Myrl E. Jones, age 87, died at his home Tuesday, May 4, 2004, after several years of diminishing health. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, May, 7, 2004, at the Brookings Wesleyan Church, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Brookings Wesleyan Church Building Fund. Myrl Emrys Jones was born October 17, 1916, at Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Emrys and Mary Louise (Griffiths) Jones. He lived and attended school in Aberdeen through his junior year in high school and graduated from high school in Groton, South Dakota. While employed at the K.O. Lee Manufacturing plant in Aberdeen, Myrl enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served stateside and in India and China prior to his honorary discharge in 1946. Upon returning to the United States, Myrl moved to Brookings to work as an automotive parts man for Robertson Auto Electric. He continued his employment there as the business changed hands until he and Clarence Diesen purchased the company as Mr. Automotive in 1974. Myrls son, Richard, became his partner upon Mr. Diesens retirement and changed the name to CarQuest. Myrl married June Moberg, July 18, 1950, in Brookings. They made their home in Brookings and were active in planning for and establishing of the Brookings Wesleyan Church. Myrl love the Lord and served Him through many offices of the church and Sunday School. Special interests included church activities, reading his Bible, singing in the church choir and a mens quartet, stamp collecting, lapidary rock collecting and polishing, playing and watching baseball, having keen interest in other sports, gardening and traveling. He enjoyed people. He was proud of his family and loved them to the fullest. He was a member of Golden K, former 30-year member of the American Legion, and Brookings Area Gem and Mineral Society. Survivors include his wife, June; two daughters: Kathy (Dennis) Hetrick of Watertown, South Dakota, and Laurie (Neal) Hauser of Hershey, Pennsylvania; one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Jones (Denny) Van Dyke of Brookings; five grandchildren; one grandson-in-law; a sister-in-law, Donna Luke; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Rick; his parents; two brothers, and two sisters.
