Obituary

Muriel A. Granum, age 88, of Volga, died Monday, February 29, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake, South Dakota. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment of cremated remains in First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dakota Sun Assisted Living or First Lutheran Church.

Muriel Ardis (Hanson) Granum was born on August 23, 1927 to Albert and Anna (Alexander) Hanson.   She attended country school and Volga School District.

Muriel was united in marriage to Glenon Granum on November 6, 1947.

Muriel was employed in the nursing field all of her working years. She began work at the Volga Hospital in 1959. She worked at the Brookings Hospital from 1962 until 1975 when she went to nurses training at Lake Area VoTech in Watertown, SD. After earning a LPN Degree, she was employed by the VA in Sioux Falls. In 1990 she returned to Volga to build a home and retire.

Muriel was a baptized and confirmed member of First Lutheran Church in Volga. She was a member of the Sons of Norway and Mary Circle.   She was an active volunteer with Stevens Ministry and First Lutheran's Homework House. Muriel traveled extensively on the back of a Goldwing motorcycle in the continental United States. She enjoyed woodworking and dancing. Family was of superior importance and she worked to remain connected all of her life.

Muriel is survived by her son, Brian (Cheryl) Granum, Volga; a daughter, Pamela (Chuck) Atyeo, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Krista (Nick) Gortmaker, Milbank; Laura (Dan) Overbo, Volga; Nathan (Davita) Atyeo, Clear Lake; Courtney Granum (Dan Kruse), Volga; Chelsey Granum (Keith Tarbox), Volga; Chantel Granum, Wahpeton, ND; eight great-grandchildren, Justus, Kolsyn, Kyan, Easton, Micah, Corley, Keyra, Riley. She was preceded by her husband and son, James.
