Mitchell Bob Mans, age 85, of Volga, died Monday, November 8, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 12, 2010, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be Thursday 5-8 P.M. at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. The family prefers that memorials be directed to Gideons International or the Volga Christian School.
Mitchell Robert Mans was born March 24, 1925, at Volga, South Dakota, to Peter and Johanna (Lengkeek) Mans. He attended school in Bangor Township. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1946. On November 17, 1948, he married Dena Meyer at Volga. They farmed in the Volga-Bruce area. Dena died August 26, 2000. Bob married Laura Van Beek on May 4, 2002.
Bob was a member of the Volga Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and elder. He was a member of the Burrows-Young American Legion Post No. 114, and he served for 45 years on the Brookings County Weed and Pest Board. He was on the Land O Lakes board for 18 years, and was a member of the Gideons International. He was privileged to travel to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight in November 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Mans, of Volga; two sons: Wayne (Christine) Mans and Gary Mans, both of rural Bruce; four step-daughters: Marcia (Steve) Moore of Champlin, Minnesota, Marilyn (Ron) Lunt of Dover, Delaware, Bev (George) Cotton of Volga, and Lenae (Clint) Liddiard of Sioux Falls; a step-daughter-in-law, Chris Schmidt of Brookings; three grandchildren: Travis, Meghan (Shawn) Peterson, and James; several step-grandchildren; two great-grandsons; several step-great-grandchildren; five brothers: Arie Mans of Orange City, Iowa, Henry (Margaret) Mans of Lynden, Washington, Clarence Mans of Cornwall, New York, Louis Mans of Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Rev. Peter (Joann) Mans of Blaine, Washington; four sisters: Dena Meyer of Volga, Margaret DeGroot of Michigan, June (Leonard) Gorter of Lynn Valley, Kansas, and Johanna Brink of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dena; an infant son, Wayne Douglas; a brother, Otto; a sister, Elizabeth Terkelsen; and a step-son, Doug Van Beek.
