Obituary

Mildred E. Johnson, age 102, of Brookings, died Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the White Healthcare Center in White, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 1, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment in Hillcrest Cemetery at Estelline, South Dakota. There will be no visitations. Mildred Eupha (Ross) Johnson was born April 28, 1905, in Brookings County, South Dakota, to William and Bertha (Breed) Ross. She moved with her family to a farm near Estelline when she was two. She graduated from high school in Estelline, and played basketball while in high school. Following high school, she attended Eastern Normal School in Madison. On March 12, 1926, Millie married Dr. B.E. Moore. She married Guy I. Johnson on November 20, 1934, at Brookings. He died in 1958, and Millie moved to Brookings in 1959, where she worked in the food service at South Dakota State University, retiring at age 75. Millie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the State Art Museum Guild, and she sang in the Top Hats Band. She was a Past Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star. She had many interests including cooking, baking, sewing, playing bridge, and watching NBA basketball on television. Survivors include her two daughters: Donna (Bill) Duffield of Browns Valley, Minnesota, and Joann (Michael) Medbery of Portland, Oregon; a son, Dennis Johnson and special friend Pauline Earley, of Brookings; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two sisters: Rubye Frie and Vera Stensgaard; and two brothers, Bert and Harvey Ross.
