Mildred Millie D. Phillips, age 93, of Brookings, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Graveside services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 7, 2004, at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Mildred Millie Dunn Phillips was born March 20, 1911, at Flandreau, South Dakota, to Elmo W. and Myrtie (Dailey) Dunn. Her father farmed on family land in Moody County in Flandreau. Millie graduated from Flandreau High School. She attended college for two years. Millie married George H. Phillips on June 15, 1935. Her husband eventually became head of the journalism department at SDSU and had a distinguished career. They raised two sons, both SDSU graduates. Millies and Georges retirement years were spent in Bella Vista, Arkansas. They both loved to golf, play bridge and entertain friends. When Georges health declined, they moved back to Brookings. George died in 1990. In her twilight years, Millies health deteriorated and she resided at Brookview Manor for about nine months prior to her death. Millie was quite the cow girl in her youth, according to her sons. She was an avid horse rider and rode as well as most men. Other interests were a love of cooking, crocheting and an accomplished knitter. She was of the Episcopal faith. Millie is survived by her sons: William Phillips of Felda, Florida and ret. Lt. Col. James M. (Kathryn) Phillips of North Little Rock, Arkansas; grandchildren: Roxanne Henley of Arbela, Missouri, Bill Phillips of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Jim Phillips of Tallahassee, Florida; four great-grandchildren; and friend, Phyllis Kellan of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters: Wilna Hanly and Miriam Nicholson, and her brother, William Dunn.
