IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mercedes "Peggy"
Freyberg
June 21, 1925 – January 8, 2021
On January 8th, 2021, Peggy peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior.
Mercedes "Peggy" Carol Sneve was born on June 21, 1925 in Volga, SD to William and Cora Sneve. She grew up in Sinai, SD on a farm. In 1944 she married Ervine Pederson, and they were blessed with three children: Paulette, Vaughan, and Shawn.
After graduation from Sinai High School in 1944, Peggy worked for the Brookings Press (earning 1¢ per line typed). Peggy enjoyed working with numbers, holding positions with Norwest Bank as a bookkeeper and later as Secretary-Deputy Clerk of Courts for Brookings County. She enjoyed 17 years on the SDSU campus as Secretary/Bookkeeper for Saga and later Aramark Food Service where she was "mom" to many students.
Peggy had a zest for living an active and creative life, enjoying home decorating, flower arranging, furniture refinishing, and sewing. She even braided room-sized wool rugs for her home in Brookings. She came from a musical family, and taught herself to play the piano using all black keys. Music was a huge part of her life; It spoke to her in many ways. Hymns and Christian Music were at the top of her list, along with her favorite toe tapping Big Band tunes.
Peggy loved people! The sparkle in her eyes and her warm smile lit up the room when she entered, and she reached out to others with helping hands. She had a great sense of humor and was delightful to be with. She was wise, talented, compassionate, gracious, and generous.
Above all, Peggy was focused on God and Family. Peggy's life was filled with church and community activities where she could be of service to others. Knowing, loving, and living for her Lord and Savior was evident in her lifestyle. She credited her Heavenly Father for her strong faith and courage. She was a prayer warrior who knew the power of prayer and prayed faithfully for many people.
Later in life when Peggy married Carl Freyberg, she welcomed his family with open arms. She was thrilled to have stepchildren, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her family and friends brought her great joy. She was a loving mother and mentor to many, always full of support and encouragement. She hosted Bible studies and coffee parties for friends and sleepovers for the grandkids, cooked many meals and baked goods, and attended countless concerts and sporting events.
Peggy's love for dogs started young with the collies her dad raised, and over the years she had many furry babies that she loved dearly. Amber Joy has been her constant companion for the last 12 years. What a pair!
Grateful to have shared her life are her daughter Paulette (Lyle) Terveen of Sioux Falls, SD, son Shawn Pederson of Appleton, WI, stepchildren Wayne (Teressa) Freyberg of Brookings, SD, and Carolyn (James) Wakeman of Brookings, SD, granddaughters Heather (Ryan) Swanson, Lindsay (Jesse) Logterman, great-grandchildren Cadence Swanson, Brooklyn Swanson, and Owen Logterman, 15 step-grandchildren, and 21 step-great-grandchildren. Peggy will be fondly remembered by her host of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Carl Freyberg, her stepdaughter Kathy Medrano, her son Vaughan Pederson, her parents Bill and Cora Sneve, and her brother Stanton Sneve.
A small, private graveside service and burial will take place, with a Celebration of Life Service to be announced this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Feeding South Dakota and The Sioux Falls Humane Society. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to The family of Peggy Freyberg, C/O Eidsness Funeral Home, 1617 Orchard Drive, Brookings, SD 57006.
