Mavis Marian Fish was born April 27, 1927, to Chester and Marian (Christensen) Fish at her grandparents' home near Bruce SD. She and her family lived on several farms in the Bruce-Volga-Arlington area. She attended country schools and graduated from Volga High School in 1945. After attending General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison SD, she taught in country schools in the area. On June 20, 1948 she married Robert Vostad in Volga. They farmed near Volga and Sinai. Like many farmers' wives of the day, she gardened, canned, sewed, and assisted on the farm wherever she was needed. In 1960, they moved to Orland, CA. They returned to Volga in 1961, and purchased the Texaco station which they operated literally side by side for over 25 years. During that time, Mavis also worked as a rural mail carrier and operated Volga Federal Credit Union. Bob passed away on April 7, 1986. Mavis continued to work for the Credit Union for some years after that.

She continued to live in Volga and spent ten winters in Arizona. Mavis was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Volga. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She enjoyed dancing, travelling, reading, and playing games and cards with friends. Her greatest joy was derived from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was active in the 60s Plus dining program, senior citizens, and church activities including Circle and teaching Sunday School. She frequently transported older (and not always older) friends to church, 60s Plus, etc. She was honored as an ICAP Volunteer.

Survivors include her children; Sheryl (Bill) Van Beek and Kent (Karen) Vostad of Volga, Jeff (Laura)Vostad of Brookings and Gayle (Kim) Vostad of Arcadia, FL; her siblings, Bob (Connie) Fish of Lantana TX, Karen (Bob) Steptoe of Miller, SD, and Sandra (Leroy) Atkins of Huron SD; in-laws, Gene Ibach of Pierre, SD, and Dorothy Weisser of Brookings, SD; 7grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents, Chester and Marian Fish; her sister, Marlys Ibach; brother-in-law, Dick Vostad; and father and mother-in-law, Thorwald and Esther Vostad.
