Mavis June Diedrich died, Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Crook County Long Term Care Facility in Sundance, WY., after a short illness. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Our Savior Lutheran Church (WELS synod) in Brookings. Burial will be in the Elkton City Cemetery. Visitations will precede services one hour. Mavis June Diedrich was born Sept. 24, 1923, to Roy and Elsie(Jensen) Brown on a farm north of Elkton, SD. In January of 1943, she married Paul Furhmann and they had a daughter, Ardelle. On June 26, 1948, she married Evan Diedrich and they had a daughter, Marlene. Mavis farmed alongside her husband on a farm north of Elkton until their retirement in 1979 when they moved into Elkton. Mavis lived in Brookings 30 years until she moved to Sundance, WY., in 2011. Mavis was a woman who was proud of many things in her life, she could work the farm, write poetry, and make beautiful quilts. In 1998, she won recognition for outstanding achievement in poetry. She made her first quilt at the age of ten and made over 100 of them for her family by her 80th birthday. Left to honor her memory are her daughters, Ardelle (Clifford) Leins of Sundance, WY. and Marlene Stout of Newton, IA. Four grandchildren, Laura Lee (Herb) Miller of Dubuque, IA.; Clifton (Monica) Leins of Montrose, SD; LeAnn (Scott) Vogel of Rapid City, SD; and Jessica Stout of Newton, IA. Mavis also had seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Her sisters, Verlo Brown and Barbara Ann Wilking of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan, her parents, brothers LeRoy and Melvin Brown and three siblings in infancy. She is lovingly remembered as a good daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.
