Obituary

Matilde Hobbie, age 93, of Brookings, died Thursday, January 25, 2007, at the Flandreau Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at the Brookings Wesleyan Church, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorials may be directed to the World Gospel Missions. Matilde Catherine (Volquardsen) Hobbie was born October 11, 1913, near Flandreau, South Dakota, to Carl and Cacilie (Drewes) Volquardsen. She attended Smythe country school and then did housework for the Hobbie family. On March 15, 1933, she married Oscar V. Hobbie at Egan, South Dakota. The Hobbies farmed all their married life near Flandreau. Oscar died June 3, 1997. Matilde lived at Stoneybrook Assisted Living in Brookings since February 2006. Matilde accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior while attending Riverview Methodist Church in rural Moody County. She was a member of the Brookings Wesleyan Church, taught Sunday School, and served in the nursery. She was involved with the World Gospel Mission Prayer Band. She was active in the Beulah Bible Camp and the Gideons Auxiliary. She had been a member of the Sioux River Sues Extension Club. Matilde had many interests including horses, sewing, candle making, gardening, and birds, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include eight children: Verna (Rev. Everett) Hind of Edgerton, Minnesota, Roger (Kay) Hobbie of Flandreau, South Dakota, Jerald (Janice) Hobbie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, JoAnn (Karl) Nichols of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Norman (Shirley) Hobbie of Diamond Bar, California, Diane (Dean) Perry of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Glenda (Gregg) Gass of DeSmet, South Dakota, and Gordon (Sherry) Hobbie of Altamonte Springs, Florida; a son-in-law, Alf Pedersen, of Longmont, Colorado; 26 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ernest (Pauline) Hobbie, of Huron, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Lillian; a daughter, Marlys Pedersen; a brother, Ted Volquardsen; and two granddaughters, Stacy Hobbie and Beven Vanasse.
