Obituary

Mary A. Vander Wal, age 96, of Bruce, was welcomed into her heavenly home on Friday, April 30, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the First Reformed Church in Volga with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Mary Adriana (Wiersma) Vander Wal was born December 30, 1913, on the family farm near Volga, to John and Niesje (Kleinjan) Wiersma. She grew up in Brookings County and received her education in country schools. She graduated from Volga High School in 1930. Following graduation she attended South Dakota State College for two years. She taught country schools from 1932 until 1939. On May 29, 1939, she married Arie J. Vander Wal at Volga, South Dakota. They farmed in the Volga-Bruce area. A.J. died January 21,1985.

Mary was a longtime member of First Reformed Church of Volga and the Reformed Church Women. She was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and was involved in the Girls League. She was a member of the Jolly Bunch Extension Club. As a farm wife and mother, Mary appreciated and enjoyed all of Gods creation, including her family and many friends.

Survivors include her two daughters: Joanne Anderson, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Lois (Jim) Hoffman, of Platte, South Dakota; two sons: Lawrence (Sally) Vander Wal, and Dale (Susan) Vander Wal, of Bruce; twelve grandchildren: C. Eric and R. Stuart Anderson, Kent, Dean, Paul, Kelly, Jeff, and Londa Vander Wal, Clint, Cody, and Clayton Hoffman, and Tiffany Maydew; great-grandchildren: Morgan, Nicole and C. Evan Anderson, Ethan, Baillie, Carter, Lindsey, Michaela, Riley, Kaitlyn, Dayton, Mariah, Alicia, Preston, Sadie, and Mitchell Vander Wal, Natali Hoffman, and Claire Maydew; a sister, Doris Van Maanen, of Volga; a brother, Frank (Pat) Wiersma, of Tucson, Arizona; and sisters-in-law: Leona Wiersma of Springfield, Missouri, and Emma Wagenaar of Aberdeen, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Daniel and John Wiersma; and a son-in-law, C. Dick Anderson.
