Mary Hayes, age 84, of Brookings, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 1-3 P.M. on Sunday, January 19, also at GracePoint Wesleyan Church. Mary was born on June 20, 1929 to Edward and Mary (Adney) DeKraai near Brandt, SD. She was one of 10 children.Mary grew up on the family farm near Brandt. She received her education in the Brandt schools and was a graduate of the Brandt High School in 1947. Mary continued her education at Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. She taught rural school in Deuel County for a couple of years. Mary was united in marriage to Walter Hayes on December 20, 1948 in Watertown SD. They moved to Brookings in 1950. Mary worked as a teachers aide at Hillcrest School and worked at Service Grocery for her sister, Marge. In 1971, she was employed at 3M in Brookings, and was a supervisor for over 20 years. Walter died on November 22, 2008. Mary and Walt were among the first members of the Wesleyan Church in Brookings, which later became GracePoint Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed softball, tennis, bowling, golf, and gardening. Mary also enjoyed quilting, and she made and gave away many quilts. Mary and Walt enjoyed several bus trips in their retirement years. Mary is survived by her son, Steven Hayes of Brookings, SD; her daughter, Alice Hayes of Brookings, SD; her grandchildren, Colin Hayes of Fargo, ND and Rebecca Hayes of Haslett, MI; her great-granddaughter, Eyra Mellem of Haslett, MI; her brother, Sam (Darlyne) DeKraai of Brookings, SD; her sister, Ellen Even of Watertown, SD and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers George, John, Lloyd, Edward (Bill) and Charles, sisters Fern Collins and Marge Tank, and her great-grandson Ari Lyle Mellem.
