Obituary

Mary Greenwood, age 91, of Brookings, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 3, 2005, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment at a later date at the Chappelle Cemetery near Pierre, South Dakota. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home, followed by a public Order of Eastern Star service at 7:00 P.M. Mary Ann Greenwood was born June 10, 1914, in a log house in Degrey in Hughes County, South Dakota. She was the third child of Joseph P. and Jessie (Jones) Greenwood. She graduated from Pierre High School in 1933, and then worked for two years raising and selling turkeys so that she could go to college. She graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen with a goal of teaching primary education. Her first Job was in rural Hughes County where she taught for one year. From there she taught at Bowdle, South Dakota, for two years, and then at Wakpala, South Dakota, located on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation for two years. She taught at Highmore, South Dakota, for two years and at Huron for one year. She moved to Brookings where she taught third grade at Central School for ten years and then at Hillcrest where she taught and served as part-time principal for two years. In 1952 she was promoted to full-time principal, until retiring in 1980. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church, Brookings Chapter No. 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association. She was active with Jobs Daughters, and she enjoyed gardening and sewing. Survivors include five nieces: Virginia (Edward) Vander Wal of Volga, Esther (Gary) Englehorn of Bucyrus, Missouri, Joyce (Rodney) La Mont of Sturgis, South Dakota, Maxine Tessier of Pierre, South Dakota, and Phyllis (Casey) Hoftiezer of Pierre, South Dakota; one nephew, Richard (Carol) Greenwood of Redfield, Iowa; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
