Obituary

Marvin A. Bortnem, age 88, of Brookings, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Covington Heights Healthcare in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church. Visitation with the family will be at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church from 7-9 P.M.Friday evening May 28. Marvin Arnold Bortnem was born May 23, 1915, in Summit Township, Lake County, South Dakota, to Theodore and Nettie (Rogen) Bortnem. He attended country school at District No.19 in Lake County. Marvin moved to Detroit where he worked as a plasterer. While there, he met Ann Andreson and they were married on September 20, 1940. They returned to South Dakota where they farmed for 60 years in Lake County south of Volga and raised their family. Ann died September 8, 1999. Marvin moved to Sunchase Apartments, Brookings in August 2002. Marvin was a life-time member of Lake Campbell Lutheran Church where he served as congregational president, deacon, Sunday school teacher and more. He enjoyed farming, his pets and working with horses. Survivors include his three children: Arnold and Peggy (Pesicka) Bortnem of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bryan and Catherine (Hoss) Bortnem of Rutland, South Dakota, and Anita (Rev.Norm) Heater of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Holk of Arroyo Grande, California; and a special friend, Grace Horton, of Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and three brothers: Edwin, James, and Harold.
