Marvel E. Bergjord, 93, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 26, 2010, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
Marvel Ethel (Foster) Bergjord was born February 12, 1917, at Estelline, South Dakota, to Oliver and Millie (Synaground) Foster. She was raised on a farm south of Estelline next to the Big Sioux River. She attended school at Estelline. On March 1, 1937, she married Palmer Bergjord at Blue Earth, Minnesota. The Bergjords farmed in the Toronto and Astoria area until 1962 when they moved to Brookings where Marvel worked for the S&L Store. Palmer died February 10, 1989.
Marvel was a member of First Lutheran Church, the quilting group, Golden Age, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, and reading. She was an avid quilter, and made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Faye Dahl-Bearman (Rick Bearman), of Volga, South Dakota; her son, Linn E. Bergjord (Carol) of Brookings; five grandchildren: Peter Dahl, Todd (Roxan) Dahl, Lesia Huffman, Chad (Trisha) Bergjord, and Lirae Bergjord; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings: Hollis Foster, LeRoy Foster, Merlin Bud Foster, Melford Babe Foster, Edith Sis McCampbell-Stenderup, Eunice Moberg, and infant twin brothers.
