Martha Tirrel, age 100, of White, died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the White Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 15, 2011, at First Baptist Church in White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Martha (Kruger) Tirrel was born November 18, 1910, at George, Iowa, to Peter G. and Florence Johanna (Bronleive) Kruger. She received her education at George, and married Stienus J. Tirrel on April 16, 1929, at Pipestone, Minnesota. After their marriage, the Tirrels moved to a farm in Argo Township north of White. After Mr. Tirrel died in 1953 Martha lived on the farm for seven years and moved to Brookings in 1960. She received her G.E.D. in 1973. She became employed at Farmhouse Fraternity and the student union at SDSU in Brookings, retiring in 1982. Martha was a member of First Baptist Church, V.F.W., and Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed fishing and sports. Survivors include three daughters: Thelma Peters of Little Rock, Iowa, Marjorie Prunty of Brookings, and Dorothy (Leslie) Sletten of Custer, South Dakota; five sons: Glen (Betty) Tirrel of Toronto, John (Genie) Tirrel of White, Stanley (Janice) Tirrel of White, David (Penny) Tirrel of Cornell, Wisconsin, and Robert (Sherry) Tirrel of Rush, Colorado; 38 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Virgil Benz, of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, James; a daughter, Frances; eight brothers; seven sisters; seven grandsons; two great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; and a daughter-in-law.
