Obituary

Martha Jeanne Hobbie, age 80, departed this world to live with Jesus, on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at her home in Brookings after a short battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Her memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Brookings at 2:00 on Thursday, October 22. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Eidsness Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 21, from 5:00-7:00. Martha was born on October 11, 1935 in Des Moines, IA to Dennis and Helen Gilbert. She attended school at Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and received her diploma in 1956. She practiced nursing at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, as well as, Iowa and Minnesota. Martha worked diligently at several other vocations during the years including homemaking. She was a transcriptionist at Brookings Chiropractic and later worked at Cafe Coteau in the Children's Museum. Martha's heart for children showed in her many years of serving as a Sunday school teacher. Martha's happiest times were with family and friends, and she enjoyed many of the following interests with them including traveling, crafting, gardening, square dancing, and cheering at the SDSU basketball games for her favorite team. She is survived by her three sons, Arlin Hobbie (Rene') McKinney, TX, Keith Hobbie (Rebecca) Flandreau, SD, and Dennis Hobbie (Tonya) Mankato, MN; her seven handsome grandsons that brought a lot of love and joy to her life, Benjamin, Gabriel, Parker, Daniel, Alex, Nathaniel, and Noah; siblings, Charles Gilbert, Houston, TX, Dennis Gilbert (Donna) Collins, IA, and Susan Gilbert, Moore OK; former spouse and father of her three sons, Harold Hobbie. Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Joyce Gilbert, wife of brother Charles. She will be missed by family and a host of friends including those at First Baptist Church of Brookings where her engaging smile, friendly nature, and strong faith in the Lord radiated through her life.
