Marlys Ann Schutt, age 77, of Brookings, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, beginning at 11:00A.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 2, 2017, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.
Marlys Ann Cunningham was born on February 10, 1940, to Edwin and Alice (Enevoldsen) Cunningham in Brookings, South Dakota. She attended elementary school in Brookings, and graduated from Estelline High School in 1959. On July 28, 1959, Marlys was married to Frederick Charles Hoffelt at the Congregational Church in Clear Lake, South Dakota. Frederick passed away in August of 1979. On September 8, 1989, Marlys was united in marriage to Howard Schutt in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Marlys held a number of jobs throughout her life, including working at the Estelline Community Hospital during high school, South Dakota State Driver Licensing Division administering tests, co-owning Skogmo's Store in Estelline, working as a clerk at Teeter Totter Kids Wear, working at the Brookings Hospital in the laundry department, and finally at Dollar Discount store as a clerk. It was during this time that she decided that her time was best spent at home, taking care of her mother.
Marlys was a member of the United Congregational Church in Estelline, as a youth leader, as well as a current member of First United Methodist Church in Brookings. She greatly enjoyed any time spent taking care of and spending time with her family. Marlys loved working with the public, and also enjoyed having rummage sales.
Marlys is survived by her husband, Howard Schutt, of Brookings; children: Jeff (Elaine) Hoffelt, of Cary, NC, Lori (Rick) Schultz, of Brookings, SD, Tonya (Colin) Gaalswyk, of Brookings, SD, and Jason (Janell) Hoffelt of Brookings, SD; step-children: Susan (Dan) Marking, of Grand Rapids, MN, Mike Schutt, of Brookings, SD, Leslie (Joel) Koch, of Elkton, MN, and Leah (John) Knofczynski, of Madison, SD; 22 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Alice Cunningham; husband Frederick Hoffelt, sister, Darlene Quail; and an infant son, Steven.
