IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marlys Irene
Moore
January 4, 1930 – December 17, 2025
Marlys Irene Moore was born on January 4, 1930 to Thresa and Melvin Schiefelbein on a farm west of Clear Lake, SD. Marlys and her family lived on several farms before settling on the Hillside Farm five miles west of Clear Lake. She graduated from Clear Lake High School and South Dakota State College.
Marlys married Raymond Moore in 1951 before moving to Martin, SD where she and Ray taught at Bennett County High School. Craig and Kent were born during that time.
They moved to Brookings in 1956 and Marlys continued teaching Home Economics in Volga. After purchasing a lot on 17th Avenue, Ray and Marly had a prebuilt house moved to the lot from Tyler, MN in 1957. Jay was born in Brookings in 1960 and the five Moores moved to West Lafayette, IN where Ray earned his doctorate.
Upon returning to Brookings, Marlys and the family shared her sister LaVonne's house with Uncle Marlynn while the house on Seventeenth Avenue waited for the renters to vacate. Jeff was born a few years later in 1966 and the family was fully formed.
This was when Marlys became involved in bridge groups, knitting, quilting, gardening, flower arranging, and lawn care. But included in those activities was all of the baking and food preparation for the family. She and LaVonne would cover the kitchen table with fresh donuts. They would can the garden produce leaving the kitchen hot and steamy and smelling wonderful. And all of the pies and cakes and cookies! When the bridge groups grew to include the men associated with the women a couple of the boys in the house loved to sneak into the room of tables and sneak mixed nuts and bridge mix out of the bowls.
Things started to change when boys started to leave and the family grew with daughters-in-law and then a few grandchildren. Travels to China and then Europe to see ancestral beginnings led to a house sharing with a couple from The Netherlands.
Marlys joined Ray in a long-time enjoyment of Bobcat and Jackrabbit basketball and football both on the radio and in person. She continued watching and listening to the games after Ray died in 2002. Marlys attended weddings of grandchildren and held her four great grandchildren.
Marlys was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a Home Economics honor society. Her membership was quietly and honorably held.
Most people who knew her would say Marlys was quiet and kept to herself. She was humble and loved her family dearly. A recent note sent by friends stated that her smile was what they would remember most.
Those who preceded Marlys in death include her parents, her husband, a brother, and 2 sisters.
Her survivors are: Sons Craig(Susie) Moore, Kent Moore(Deni Elliott), Jay(Jayne) Moore, and Jeff(Nicole) Moore. Grandchildren Kelsey Moore(Brian Luberts). Amy(Ryan) Childress with great grandchildren Connor, Trevor, and Callie. Danny Moore. Tommy(Kellie) Moore. Hannah(Phillip) Orr and great grandchild Owen. Will Moore.
Marlys Irene Moore, age 95, of Brookings, SD, passed away at The Neighborhoods at Brookview on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The date for a celebration of life is being planned but not scheduled at this time.
