Marjorie Louise (Willner) Bailey was born on Valentines Day, 1930, in Elmira, New York, to Fred and Wanda (Witzgahl) Willner. After graduating from Elmira Southside High School, she attended secretarial school and sang in a USO group. While on a USO outing at Sampson AFB in New York, she met Lt. Russell H. Bailey, Jr. They were united in marriage on May 7, 1955, in Elmira.
Marge had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed being an Air Force wife, living in Japan, Washington, D.C., Florida, Germany, Texas, and finally South Dakota. She was a dedicated mother of three and felt there was a lesson to learn in every experience, good or bad. Living on an acreage north of Brookings, Marge enjoyed the country life, raising chickens, riding horses, gardening, entertaining friends who stopped by, and long walks with Russ. She loved animals of all kinds and always kept the bird feeders full. After her children were grown, Marge fulfilled a lifelong dream, and at the age of 58 earned a degree in journalism at SDSU. She worked for the Estelline Journal as a reporter and photographer and later at Advance in Brookings. Marge was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years. She served as president of the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Saturday Literary Club, the Brookings Riding Club, and Chapter P of P.E.O.
Marjorie leaves behind three children: James (Yvonne) Bailey of Sioux Falls, Laurel Wiggs of Watertown, and Mark Bailey of Salem, Oregon; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She will be sorely missed, but joins her husband, Russell, who preceded her in death January 27, 2008.
