Mabel M. Yurgaitis, age 95, died on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Arlington, South Dakota. A celebration of Mabel's life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum at San Diego, California in June. Mabel Margeurete (Thoms) Yurgaitis was born on October 6, 1917, at Kingsley, Iowa, to John and Myrtle (Bogardus) Thoms. At the age of three her family moved to Bruce, South Dakota; later to White, South Dakota. Mabel graduated in 1936 from the White High School. Mabel was united in marriage to Charles Yurgaitis in Chicago, Illinois. Mabel was employed at Stone Container Corporation for many years. Upon retirement Mabel and Chuck moved to San Diego, California. Mabel moved to Dakota Sun Assisted Living Center, Volga, South Dakota in August 2009 and to the Golden Living Center in March 2012. Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Sterud and Marie (Elmer) Mannisto all of Volga; nieces, Carolyn Satter of San Diego, California, Marlys (Ray) Vander Wal of Volga, South Dakota and nephews, Gene (Carol) Derdall of Kimball, South Dakota and Daniel Yurgaitis of Aberdeen, South Dakota, along with many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck (1984); parents; brother, John Albert Thoms; sisters, Agnes Holley, Florence Malone and Georgiaetta Derdall.
