Obituary

Mabel Carolyn (Kramer) Smallfield was born February 27, 1913, north of Elkton, South Dakota, to Herman and Elizabeth (Achtenhagen) Kramer. By grace, through baptism on March 11, 1913, she became a child of God and remained so for a lifetime of 91 years. She went to her Saviors side in heaven on Monday, April 19, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Elkton, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness-Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Mabel attended country school in Richland Township. She did house work for friends and relatives. When her mother died, she kept house for her dad and brother until she married Elmer Smallfield on October 5, 1941. They farmed on farms north and northwest of Elkton until 1973 when they retired and moved into Elkton. They later moved to Brookings. Mabel was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the ladies aid, Helping Hand Club, Senior Citizens, and Birthday Club. She served as a 4-H club leader. She enjoyed doing embroidery. Survivors include her husband, Elmer, of Brookings; three sons: Duane (Linda) Smallfield of Elkton, James Smallfield of Elkton, and Ronald Smallfield of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren: Ted, Tom, Amy, Brice, Brent, Brad, Brenna, and Brianne Smallfield; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Annie Pape, Hattie Hirzel, and Selma Kramer, and four brothers: Reinhard, Roy, Lorenz, and Walter Kramer.
