Mabel Houtkooper, age 98, of Brookings, died Sunday, February 19, 2006, at the White Healthcare Center in White, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 24, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Mabel (Miller) Houtkooper was born October 14, 1907, at Abilene, Kansas, to Fred and May (Zellers) Miller. She moved to Sioux City, Iowa, with her family where she attended school through the eighth grade. The family moved to Dakota City, Nebraska, where Mabel married John Houtkooper on December 10, 1925. She and John lived in Sioux City, Iowa, for two years, and then moved to Brandt, South Dakota, where they farmed until 1956, when they moved to Estelline where they operated a motel until retiring and moving to Brookings in 1965. John died September 7, 1997. Mabel enjoyed crocheting, reading, and playing pinochle. Survivors include three sons: Donald (Norma) Houtkooper of Canby, Minnesota, Robert (Delores) Houtkooper of Brookings, and Glenn (Bernice) Houtkooper of Redwood Falls, Minnesota; a daughter, Carol (Jerry) Henneman of Sturgis, South Dakota; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Clifford; three brothers; and two sisters.
