Lyle O. Chapman, age 87, of Brookings, died Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Lyle Orie Chapman was born September 6, 1919, at Yale, South Dakota, to Orie and Grace (Weaver) Chapman. He attended schools at Yale and moved to the Arlington area in the early 1940s. On September 5, 1941, he married Lauretta M. Pederson at Diamond Lake Church at Ivanhoe, Minnesota. Lyle farmed in the Arlington area until 1970 when they moved to Volga, where he worked at Land O Lakes for a number of years. The Chapmans moved to Brookings in 1974, and Lyle worked at various jobs including helping area farmers, which he enjoyed so much. Lyle loved fishing, dancing, playing cards, and traveling. Survivors include his wife, Lauretta Chapman, of Brookings; three children: Jerilyn (Bob) Canfield of Chula Vista, California, Dan (Deb) Chapman of Brookings, and David Chapman of Yankton; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother.
