Obituary

Loyd Sterud, 84, of Volga, passed away on March 6, 2024, at the United Living Community in Brookings.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings at 10:00 a.m.  Visitation will precede the service from 9:00 am until 10:00 am.  Burial will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.

Loyd Alden Sterud was born on May 15th, 1939 in Volga SD, the son of Ernest and Anna (Peterson) Sterud.  Loyd was the oldest of six children to Ernest and Anna, and was also blessed with two older half siblings Faith and Melvin Pierce.

Loyd grew up in the Volga area receiving his education in the Oslo District #97; graduating from Rutland High School and lettering in track and football.  After High School, Loyd joined the Army.  After leaving the Army, he moved to Belle Fourche, SD, where he met the love of his life Donna Kay (Holm).  While in Belle Fourche, he decided to join the Navy and enlisted for four additional years.  During his service, he visited 14 different countries, spending 19 months in Okinawa.

Loyd and Donna married on March 3rd, 1962, and recently celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary.  They welcomed their first daughter Darla (Ratajczak) in 1963, followed by son Lee in 1967, daughter Becky (Williamson) in 1968, and son Dick in 1971.

Loyd worked as a truck driver and was lucky enough to travel to all 50 states, he especially loved the trips where Donna could ride along.  He also managed Coast to Coast Trucking and delivered Boom trucks for Spirit Miller for 14 years before retiring completely.

After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with Donna and his family, fishing and traveling.  He loved sharing stories of the many cruises they were able to enjoy.

He is survived by his wife Donna; his daughters Darla (Ratajczak) of Sioux Falls, SD; Becky (Chad) Williamson, Montevideo, MN; Siblings, Donna (Loyd), Stanley, Juanita (Smith) and Dorothy (Granum); his Grandchildren: Kalyn, Samantha, Thomas, Lyndsi, Crystal and Lane and eight great-grandchildren.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Ernest and Anne; brother Howard, half siblings Faith and Melvin; both sons Lee and Dick O'Dean; and Granddaughter Amber Lee Moad.
