Obituary

Lloyd H. Hansen, age 82, of Brookings, died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 17, 2011, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in Pioneer Lutheran Cemetery, rural White. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be directed to the Lions Foundation, Lions Eye Bank, 4-H Foundation, Ascension Lutheran Church Scholarship, or the SDSU Foundation in Memory of Lloyd Hansen. Lloyd Hyldgaard Hansen was born October 29, 1928, at Brookings, South Dakota, to Christian and Myrthe (Pedersen) Hansen. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1946, and received a B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1960 and a M.S. degree in Agronomy in 1972 from SDSU. He served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1951 until March 1956. Lloyd married Roberta A. Saylor on February 3, 1954, at Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He served as an extension agent in Codington and Aurora Counties, a 4-H youth specialist, SDSU extension supervisor and program leader for agriculture, as an extension specialist in Botswana, and as the extension program development coordinator. Lloyd was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings for 45 years, and had served in a number of teaching and leadership roles. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, a past International Director of Lions Clubs International, a member of the Brookings Noon Lions Club, and was on the board of Brookings Area Transit Authority. He enjoyed reading, camping, hunting, and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Roberta Hansen, of Brookings; four children: Dianna (Swen) Wennblom of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Joyce Hansen of Grayslake, Illinois, Randy (Julie) Hansen of Wentworth, South Dakota, and Wayne (Elke) Hansen of Williamsburg, Virginia; five grandchildren: Trevor Wennblom, Collin (Lauren) Hansen, Cody (Elizabeth) Hansen, Christina Hansen, and Alexander Hansen; one great-granddaughter, Emerson Hansen; four brothers: Berge (JoAnn) Hansen of Edina, Minnesota, Verne (Norma) Hansen of Volga, Roger (Lonnie) Hansen of Sioux Falls, and James (Carole) Hansen of Brookings; and three sisters: Ella (Cyril) Frick of Sequim, Washington, Carol (Gary) Hill of Vancouver, Washington, and Judith (James) Harris of Eagan, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lilly Weinrich; and a grandson, Nicholas Hansen.
