Obituary

LaVonne M. Broksieck, age 91, passed away at her home in Brookings, SD, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026, with Visitation one hour prior, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, SD. Interment will immediately follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.

LaVonne Marie Broksieck was born on December 9, 1934 to Melvin and Thresa (Hoitsma) Schiefelbein in Clear Lake, SD. The Schiefelbein family lived on farms west of Clear Lake as LaVonne grew up. She attended rural school until the 7th grade, when the school was closed. LaVonne then attended school in Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School. After graduation, she stayed in Clear Lake and worked for Gunderson & Gunderson Law Office for four years.

On October 21, 1956, LaVonne married Marlynn Broksieck and they moved to Brookings. She worked for the SD Extension Service for four years, and enjoyed various part-time jobs thereafter. Marlynn and LaVonne had two children, Chad (Diane) and Jan, both of Brookings. They also had two grandsons, Tate (Lauren) of Champlin, MN and Trent of Phoenix, AZ.

LaVonne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brookings where she was involved as an elder, deacon and Sunday School Teacher. In addition, she enjoyed her Circle Group and Presbyterian Women. LaVonne had several Hobbies which included gardening, card games (especially Rook), board games (Scrabble), and spirited games of marbles with family.

Lavonne will be remembered for her baking skills, and the special treats she made for friends and family. LaVonne and her sister, Marlys, were notorious for whipping up a batch or two of homemade Doughnuts a couple times per year.

LaVonne is survived by her children, grandchildren, brother-in-law Don (Donna) Broksieck of Bonner Springs, KS; sister-in-law, Cheri Cody of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law, Doris Schiefelbein of Hendricks, MN; And a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother, and three sisters.
