Laura (Mattila) Miller, age 88, of Volga, died Friday, January 27, 2012, at the Brookings Hospital, in Brookings. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 2, 2012, at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will begin 1 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Laura Sylvia (Mattila) Miller was born May 21, 1923, in Bruce, South Dakota, to Charles Oscar and Anna K. (Marttila) Mattila. She grew up on a farm near Bruce, South Dakota and attended Oakwood #69 rural school and Bruce Public School. In the early 1940s she worked in Brookings and then moved to Detroit, Michigan, in 1944 where she worked in the Fort Wayne War Department. Laura married Richard Paul Miller on June 26, 1946, at Bowling Green, Ohio. They lived in Detroit, Michigan, for 40 years while Richard worked as a construction engineer. In 1984 he retired and the Millers travelled with their motor home. Then in 1991 they moved to Volga, South Dakota, where Richard died September 25, 1996. Laura enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and operating a garage sale. Survivors include her two sons: Craig (Miraja) Miller, of Caldwell, Idaho, and Michael (Sharon) Miller, of Gaines, Michigan; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Esther Iwanicki, of Volga, South Dakota, and Aili and Helen Mattila, of Plymouth, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents, Charles and Anna; four brothers and one sister.
