Larry "Lars' Hartley, age 62, of Brookings, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Larry Eugene Hartley was born September 21, 1949, at Estelline, South Dakota, to Chester and Olga (Skovlund) Hartley. He grew up and attended school at Bruce, and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He received his G.E.D. while in the Navy. He was discharged in 1972 and returned home to take care of his mother who was ill with cancer. He worked at the physical plant at SDSU until ill health forced his retirement in about 1993. He also worked part-time at Danny's Lounge in Brookings. "Lars" was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce, the V.F.W. in Brookings, and the American Legion in Bruce. He enjoyed riding his Harley, cooking, and collecting guns and knives. Survivors include a brother, Harlan Hartley, of Brookings; nephews, Paul (Eva) Hartley of Brookings, and Ben and Joshua Hartley of Monticello, Minnesota; great-nephews: Dylan and Landon; great-nieces: Raihanna and Molly Jo; aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a special "daughter," Michelle Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
