Larry G. Fluharty, age 80, of Brookings, died Friday, June 3, 2011, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 6, 2011, at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Interment will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, at Scotty Philips Cemetery in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Larry Gene Fluharty was born April 6th, 1931, in Pierre, South Dakota, to Alzonzo and Gretchen (Knoepker) Fluharty. He attended country schools and graduated from Pierre High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1960. Larry lived in the Ft Pierre area and worked on the family ranch. On June 2, 1956 he married Lavonne Sargent. They moved to the Brookings area in 1969 where he continued to work with cattle. In his younger years Larry enjoyed working with cattle (brand L7L) and flying airplanes. In recent years he enjoyed radio controlled airplanes, gardening, birds, and staying in touch with family and friends through email and Facebook, reading, watching TV and spending time with family. Survivors include his wife, Lavonne of Brookings; four children: Terri (Dale) Christianson of Rohnert Park, California, Leslie (Randy) Schwarz of Hendricks, Minnesota, Mary Beth (Brian) Sik of Brandt, South Dakota, and Lee (Michaele) Fluharty of Ft Wayne, Indiana; nine grandchildren: Savonna and Shonna Christianson, Sarah (Ryan) Orban, Elizabeth Schwarz (Lee Schaffran), Wade (Laura) Schwarz, Anastasia Schwarz; Barry Sik; Mackenzie and Christopher Fluharty, Sydny, Britny, Delany, and Dalton Sheltz; four great - grandchildren : Cade, Kali, Brynn and Colton: three sisters: Patricia Teuber, Mary Ellen (deceased Frank)Laughtenschalger, Kathleen (deceased Jim)Creager; sister in law Patty Fluharty; and brother-in-law, Mike (Tootie) Sargent. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother George; mother and father-in- law, Lee and Nellie Sargent;infant son; and infant grandson.
