Obituary

Kermit Julian Ueland, age 74, of Brookings, SD, passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, SD. Kermit Julian Ueland was born October 17, 1939, in Hendricks, Minnesota to Lewis and Bertha (Sommervold) Ueland. He was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Hendricks. He attended Hendricks public school, graduating in 1958. Four days after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as an Army Medic in Hawaii until being honorably discharged in 1960. Following his service, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked at the Hotel Leamington for 7 years. While living in Minneapolis, Kermit married Sharon (Anderson) Ueland in 1964. Kermit and Sharon moved to Brookings, SD, in 1967. He then started working at South Dakota State University as a custodian. He worked at SDSU for the next 34 years, retiring in 2001. Kermit was a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings and especially enjoyed watching the games with his grandson, Ciaran. He was also an avid reader and could often be found reading American history and the Bible. Kermit treasured time spent with his family and loved to exchange funny stories with them over coffee. For many years, Kermit was a supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), and St. Joseph's Indian School. Kermit is survived by his brother, Harris (Charlotte) Ueland of Marshall, MN; his children, Lori Ueland of Brookings; Stacey (Lorcan) Ueland-McGuinness of Sioux Falls; one grandchild, Ciaran McGuinness of Sioux Falls; and many cousins. He is also survived by his former wife, Sharon Ueland, and her daughter, Mary Beth, both of Brookings; and many loving in-laws of Colorado and the Republic of Ireland. Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Bertha; his baby brother, Lovaine; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his ever faithful dog, Shelsie.
