Katie J. Smith, age 90, of White, died Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the White Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Thursday, February 10, at the United Methodist Church in White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in White.
Katie Johannah (Bruns) Smith was born March 2, 1920, near Elkton, South Dakota, to Eibo and Anna (Wilhelm) Bruns. She grew up near Elkton, and on April 14, 1941, she married Norman Smith at Elkton. They moved to a farm northeast of White where they lived until Norm passed away September 18, 1979. Katie moved into White in July 1981.
Katie was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, White Senior Citizens, and the Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, dancing, and having her grandkids around.
Survivors include nine children: Norma Krogman of Elkton, Shirley (Alvin) Leisinger of Lebanon, Oregon, Arlene (Richard) Robbins of Wheatland, Wyoming, Virgil (Betty) Smith of Lady Lake, Florida, Steven (Judy) Smith of White, Calvin Smith of White, Arven (Carol) Smith of Elkton, Vernon (Nancy) Smith of Gettysburg, South Dakota, and Nancy (Kermith) Johnson of Abilene, Texas; 33 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert Bruns of Ripon, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman, in 1979; three grandsons; a brother, John; a sister, Anna; and a son-in-law, Don.
