Obituary

Karin Youngberg, age 76, of Brookings, died Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. No services are planned.

Karin Ann (Wheeler) Youngberg was born October 7, 1939, in a farmhouse near Raymond, South Dakota, to Elmo and Mable (Schubloom) Wheeler, the seventh of nine children. She grew up on the farm and attended country school for seven years. She graduated from Raymond High School in 1957. That summer she worked for Ted and Dorothy Hustead at Wall Drug, which was a memorable experience. That fall she lived in Aberdeen and worked at various jobs. After being let out of two of them she decided that she needed to learn how to do something productive so she enrolled at Northern State Teachers College and graduated with a two-year teaching certificate. She taught  fourth grade in Rapid City. She took night classes and attended summer school and graduated with majors in elementary education and English. She continued teaching in Rapid City and St. Paul Park, Minnesota. She continued her education and obtained library certification and was the librarian at North Junior High in Rapid City.

Karin met her future husband, Joe Youngberg, in Rapid City, and they were married June 7, 1968. In 1969 they moved to Vermillion where Karin became the high school librarian while Joe attended USD. In 1970 they moved to Pierre where Karin worked as a reference librarian at the South Dakota State Library. Their children, Jack and Jennifer, were born in Pierre.

The Youngbergs lived in Fargo for a time, and moved to Brookings in 1976. Karin became a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed attending her childrens' school and athletic events. They also enjoyed many concerts together. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, and riding horses.

Survivors include her husband, Joe, of Brookings; a son, Jack (Becky) Youngberg, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; three grandsons; a step-son: Greg (Tase) Estes and their two children, of Loveland, Colorado; sisters, Cleo (Jerry) Thelen of Pierre, South Dakota, and Diane Taylor of Watertown, South Dakota; a brother, Dallas (Lois) Wheeler, of Watertown; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Gene, Jay, Tom, and Dick; a sister, Beverly; and her daughter, Jennifer.

Karin wishes "Happy trails to you."
