Obituary

Judith Frie Talbert, age 58, died of cancer at her home in Brookings, South Dakota, on Saturday, December 4, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 2: 00 P.M. Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. She will be interred in Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Memorials may be made to the Brookings Humane Society. Flowers may be sent to Eidsness Funeral Home. Judy was born December 10, 1945, in Brookings to Forest and Rubye (Ross) Frie. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1963 and from SDSU with a degree in journalism in 1967. She worked as a newspaper reporter in Sioux City, Iowa, Honolulu, Hawaii, and with the United Press International in Washington, D.C.. After leaving the news business she also worked as the press officer for the Presidential Commission on International Womens Year, as a press officer for several associations and as a transcriber. As a reporter she covered state legislatures, Congress, national political conventions and the White House. She left UPI as regional editor in Washington shortly after she married James N. Talbert of Washington, D. C. in 1974. They lived in Washington until his retirement from federal service in 2000, when they came to live in Brookings. Judy was known for her love of family and friends, animals, books, and movies. Her knowledge of Hollywood lore was legendary. She was also a constant reader who loved to laugh and tell humorous stories. She was a member of the Brookings Regional Humane Society and was active in the group of citizens who worked to save the 1921 building. She is survived by her husband, James N. Talbert of Brookings; brothers: Glen Frie of Omaha, Nebraska, and Larry Frie of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Sandy Smith, of Long Beach, California; her step-daughter, Teresa Robinson, of Fairfax, Virginia; and two grandchildren. She also has numerous cousins in the Brookings area.
