Obituary

Judy Higgins, age 77, of Volga, died Monday, July 20, 2015, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Interment of cremated remains will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Frankfort Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Judith Brod Higgins was born April 16, 1938, at Chicago, Illinois, to Law N. and Bernice (Heinz) Brod. She moved with her family to Huron, South Dakota, in 1947, and graduated from Huron High School in 1956. She attended Huron College for two years, and graduated from Dakota State with a bachelor's degree in 1970. On August 16, 1958, Judy married Calvin F. Higgins at Huron. They lived at Volga from 1964 until 1988, Lake Preston from 1988 until 1998, and since 1998 in Volga. Judy taught school for a year in Guam and at Sioux Valley in Volga from 1970 until 1998. Judy was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lions International, South Dakota Education Association, and the National Education Association. She enjoyed reading, traveling, camping, and counted cross stitch. Survivors include her husband, Calvin Higgins, of Volga; two daughters: Kelley (David) Nowell of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and Leslie Higgins of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren: Amber and Jesse Nowell; four great-grandchildren: Reed, Reagan, Kendra, and Wyatt; and two brothers: Nick (Connie) Brod of Akron, Ohio, and Paul (Lynne) Brod of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.
