Obituary

Judith A. Burrell, age 88, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD.

Judith was born on January 12, 1938, in Brookings, SD, to Claude and Ardath (Sherwood) Peterson. She grew up alongside her brother, Douglas, and attended school in Watertown, SD, graduating from Watertown High School in 1957. Following graduation, Judith returned to Brookings, where she met her future husband, Bruce Burrell.

Throughout her working years, Judith was employed as a bookkeeper for several local businesses, including Coast to Coast Hardware, Burrell's Chem-Dry, and Burrell's Janitorial. She was a dedicated and hardworking individual who took pride in her work. In her later years, Judith worked at Walmart in Brookings, where she continued to enjoy being involved in the community.

Faith was an important part of Judith's life, and she was a member of Methodist churches throughout the years. Judith was also an avid sports fan, particularly when it came to South Dakota State University football and basketball. She enjoyed cheering on the Jackrabbits and attended many Summit League basketball games over the years. She also developed a love for hockey through watching and supporting her son.

Outside of work and sporting events, Judith enjoyed traveling, especially taking trips to the Black Hills and Canada. These travels provided her with many wonderful memories and opportunities to enjoy time away from her everyday routine. She spent most her time watching her shows, playing solitaire, putting beautiful puzzles together, and most of all spending time with her cherished friends: Helen, Ray, and Reggie.

Judith is survived by her four children, Barry (Dawn) Burrell of Brooklyn Park, MN, Patty Burrell of Sioux Falls, SD, Pam (Johnny) Wells of Colorado Springs, CO, and Bradley Burrell of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren, Bryan, Brandon, Zachary, Hayden, Savanah, Kevin, Jasmine, and Josh; and eight great-grandchildren, Aubrie, Autumn, Hadley, River, Easton, Maverick, Eloise, and Liam.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Burrell; her parents, Claude and Ardath Peterson; and her brother, Douglas Peterson.
