Judeen grew up on a farm near Waseca, MN, and graduated from Waseca Central High School in 1946 and St. Olaf College in 1950. He received his Master of Divinity from Luther Theological Seminary and was ordained into Ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1954. During his ministry, Judeen served as intern at Our Saviors and Florida Lutheran Churches in Canby, MN, and as pastor of Oslo, Bethania, and Lone Rock Lutheran Churches in rural Flandreau, SD; Emmanuel and Skrefsrud Lutheran Churches in Beresford, SD; American Lutheran Church in DeSmet, SD; St John's Lutheran Church in Bancroft, SD; and First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, IA. Following Judeen's retirement in 1993, he continued to be active in ministry through supply preaching and filling in as interim pastor in the east central South Dakota area, and was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. In addition to his ministry within congregations, he served the broader church in many ways, including Vice President of the South Dakota District of the ALC, Board of Directors of the Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota, and on the Board of the University Lutheran Center of South Dakota State University. Judeen had a keen interest in his Norwegian heritage and was active in Sons of Norway Fjordland Lodge 508 as President, newsletter editor, and travel coordinator. He was also an active member of Master Gardeners of South Dakota and was honored at the state meeting with the Gold Star Award. Judeen was united in marriage to Marian Severtson of Kenneth, MN, on June 6, 1954. They were the parents of three children: Beth, Renate, and Luther. Upon his retirement in 1993, they moved to Brookings, South Dakota. Marian died on March 12, 1999. Four years later, he married Mary Negstad of Volga, SD, on September 6, 2003, making Volga their home. Early ministry was busy, but annual camping trips and Sunday afternoons were cherished times spent with family. Judeen found equal joy in listening to classical music and in studying the stock market. He was an avid reader of theology, history, and literature. These passions carried over to his extensive travels throughout Europe in his retirement. He had a great love of gardening and enjoyed sharing his produce with family and friends. This year marked his 70th consecutive garden. In addition to the love for his family, Judeen felt blessed by the many friendships developed throughout his ministry, interests and activities. He is survived by his wife, Mary Negstad of Volga, SD, his children and grandchildren: Beth Johnson (David Smith), Lilian and Matthew of Slinger, WI; Renate Johnson (John Hindbjorgen), Carter and Kaia of Fish Lake near Astoria, SD; and Luther Johnson (Mary Brown), Hope of Eden Prairie, MN; step-children Sara Stensaas (Chris), Julia and Nathan of Minneapolis, MN; and Susan Kranz (Kirk) of Brookings, SD. Judeen was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marian.
