Obituary

Joyce Evelyn (Roth) Ulmer passed away Friday, August 21, at Canistota Good Samaritan Center. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 29 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Joyce, the daughter of Carson F and Helen E (Bingham) Larimore was born in Lawrence, SD on August 26, 1933. She graduated from Colman High School and continued her education at Sioux Valley Nursing School, Weber State College in Utah, and at SDSU. Joyce married Lt. William Leslie Roth (US Air Force) in 1953 in Estelline, SD. Together they raised 3 children - Leslie (Rae Marie), Colorado Springs, CO; Robert (Satsuki), Ewa Beach, HI; and James, Phoenix, AZ. During their years together, the Air Force gave them the opportunity to experience life in many parts of the country. Her husband, then Maj. William Roth, died in 1966, after which Joyce moved with her family to Brookings. Joyce married J.W. "Bill" Ulmer in 1968 in Brookings and gained 5 more children - JW "Joe" (Wendy), Meridian, ID; David (Mary), Sioux Falls; Mary (Rick) Severson, Henderson, NV; Donald (Julie), Hawarden, IA; and Jeanne (Mark Ouska), Raleigh, NC. Joyce was active in a variety of church and community organizations. She was a co-founder of the Dakota Care Hospice program, she chaired the Brookings Area United Way, and was a board member of the Lake Poinsett Area Development Association. Joyce was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, serving on many boards and committees over the years. She held the office of president of ALCW and of the Brookings Church Women United. She was active in the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary, the Brookings Women's Shelter, University Week for Women, Dakota Dusters Motorcycle Club safety classes for youth, and the Amateur Trapshooting Association. She was named SD Mother of the Year in 1989 and represented the state at the National Convention in Seattle that year. Joyce enjoyed cooking, gardening, and traveling in their motorhome. In recent years she and Bill split time between Lake Poinsett in the summers and Pharr, TX in the winters. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her first husband, by her second husband, by her brother Ray Larimore, and by her son Robert Roth. She is survived by her brother Roger Larimore, her 7 children, her 15 grandchildren, and her 20 great-grandchildren.
