Joyce Peters, age 90 of Brookings, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Brookings Hospital.  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Joyce was born in Orient, SD, the daughter of William and Ellen Anna Giles.  At the age of five, the family moved to Estelline, SD, where she grew up and received her education, graduating high school in 1951.

On September 16, 1951, she and Merlin (Shorty) Peters were married at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline.  They resided in Brookings, SD, where she became a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.  Three sons were born to this union: Mike, Jeff, and Mark.

In the summer of 1979, Merlin and his partner sold ownership of Jackrabbit Oil and Tire.  Joyce and Merlin built a new home and moved to Silver City, NM, where they lived for four years.  They soon built again and moved to Woodmoor, CO, within sight of Pike's Peak and the Air Force Academy.  The couple absolutely loved the mountains.  A new church family at Shepherd of the Springs Church, neighbors, and friends were all very important to them.

Merlin passed away in March of 1989, and Joyce remained in Colorado until the fall of 2018, when she moved back to Brookings to be near family and friends.  Her current home, where she has lived for the past few years was StoneyBrook Suites.  She considered the staff family and spoke highly of her care.

Joyce is survived by her three sons: Michael (Deb) Peters, of Gardner, KS, Jeffrey Peters, of Brookings, SD, and Mark Peters, of Colorado Springs, CO; two grandsons, Justin and Stephan; one great-grandson, Logan; one great-granddaughter, Charleigh; and one sister, Bev Ross; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Previous to her death were her husband, Merlin; one grandson, Christopher; sisters: Leona, Viola, Hazel, Maxine; and brothers: Vernon and Donald.
