Obituary

Josephine Mitchell, age 91, formerly of Brookings, died Sunday, November 2, 2003, in Yankton, South Dakota. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings, with interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Mary Josephine (Steward) Mitchell was born December 7, 1911, at Estelline, South Dakota, to Ray and Mary Ellen (Durkin) Steward. She attended school in Hamlin County, and graduated from Estelline High School in 1927. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and then taught country school in Hamlin County from 1929 until 1938. On April 23, 1938, she married William Gerald Mitchell in Estelline, South Dakota. The couple lived in Brookings, where Josephine was the Jackrabbit Bus Lines manager from 1957 until 1975. They lived in Hawaii from 1975 until 1979. Mr. Mitchell died September 25, 1990. Survivors include three children: Dennis (Mary) Mitchell of Yankton, South Dakota, John (Pat) Mitchell of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mary Kay (Al) Sones of Atlanta, Georgia; son-in-law, Jim McCormick of Oviedo, Florida; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Vincent Steward, of Columbus, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Patricia McCormick.
